A geothermal production well produces fluid heated by the natural heat of the earth. Geothermal fluids may be steam or hot water and in California have total dissolved solid concentrations of up to 250,000 parts per million (about seven times above sea water). Very hot geothermal fluids may be used for projects such as space heating, aquaculture, snow melting, food processing, dehydration, and hot tubs and spas.
Who needs the Geothermal Well Driller Bond?
Any person who acquires the ownership or operation of any well or wells, whether by purchase, transfer, assignment, conveyance, exchange, or otherwise, shall, within 30 days after acquiring the well or wells, file with the supervisor an individual indemnity bond in the sum of twenty-five thousand dollars ($25,000) for each well acquired, or a blanket indemnity bond in the sum of one hundred thousand dollars ($100,000) for any number of wells acquired. The bond shall be stated in substantially the language set forth in Section 3725.
What is the Geothermal Well Driller Bond?
The geothermal well driller bond protects the party requesting the surety bond, the Obligee, against any financial losses as a result of poor financial choices, damages, unethical decisions, or a failure to adhere to state and local laws on the part of you, the Principal. "Wells" mean any well for the discovery of geothermal resources or any well on lands producing geothermal resources or reasonably presumed to contain geothermal resources, or any special well, converted producing well or reactivated or converted abandoned well employed for re-injecting geothermal resources or the residue thereof.
